"Intellectual distinction is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for election to a Rhodes Scholarship. Selection committees are charged to seek excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead. The Rhodes Scholarships, in short, are investments in individuals rather than in project proposals..."

More on prolonged adolescence!

What is wrong with this picture? This poor woman is being attacked for having a child when she should be pursuing her sports career? Egads...society gone wrong.

I'm sorry for the delay...

As promised, an update of where we are!

While I am vehemently interested in TJEd, I had added some "textbook" learning to our day. I found "A2" curriculum in looking around for curricula based on the classics. It is just what my husband and I have been looking for in a curriculum. It is secular, so we are supplementing with our favorite Catholic Religion curriculum, FAITH AND LIFE as well as the Baltimore Catechism. Here is a sneak peak at the 4th grade reading list:

McGuffey's 4th Reader.

Flower Fables

Treasure Island

The Secret Garden

Black Beauty

The Princess & The Goblin

The Princess & The Curdie

Tales From Shakespeare

Captains Courageous

The Adventures of Robin hood

Around The World In 80 Days

Kidnapped

The Prince & The Pauper

Robinson Crusoe

Call Of The Wild

Not to mention there is a great spelling and grammar curriculum to go with it. The math is great, too, but we're not moving forward in math until they get ALL their tables memorized. My greatest disappointment with Singapore is that they do NOT focus on memorizing facts. We'll decide whether to use A2 for math once I'm sure my kids have the math memorized.

A2 stands for Accelerated Achievement. Its foundation is the 3 R's. All the books used for curriculum are pre 1920 with the exception of the math. The kids are loving the reading (except Tales from Shakespeare.)

I'll update my schedule next time...
